Xterra East Championship – Race Report

submitted by Ken Frankenberry

Henry & I kicked off our season last weekend with the Xterra Richmond Virginia.

This is a very unique (and brutal!) race, it’s held right in downtown Richmond, and they have a river walk / park area on the edge of the city which they use for the transition area. The swim is across the James River, run across Small Island &then swims back- the bike you cross a bridge, and on the other side of James is a huge park- with some very technical mountain bike trails. The run takes you down the river walk path, across a city bridge, through some neighborhoods, then takes you down some off road hiking trails, do some boulder hoping ( and climbing) along the river bank, and finish last couple miles on mountain bike trails.

We did the full distance race – swim/ about 14 mile bike/ 7 mile run, they had a sprint distance which was about ½ of that- the bad thing was all sprint distance athlete’s started ½ an hour before us, which meant we caught many of the slower riders on the bike, which made for lots of tight trails.

The weather has been hot and little rain, so the river was very low- Sundays temp was close to 100 degrees.

The swim was tough- we were last wave, and you would swim for 200 yards, then hit a section that was only 6 inches deep- you would have to get up and walk, and then suddenly hit a section 6 foot deep where you had to swim- it was a challenge. I did not adapt well, and as I hit the far side of river, was way back (snuck past Henry about then). The way back, I got a much better flow- passed a decent amount of people, and hit the bike fired up.  Bike went well for me; the pre- ride helped, and made up a lot of time. Henry was doing well, but ½ way into the bike- the 2 hour ride from Saturday hit him, and he started to slip back.

I had a great transition- and hit the run with the temp already in the upper 80’s. Had a solid, but one person in my class caught me, and couldn’t keep the pace.

I ended up second in my class- but had a improved time from last year, and was happy with results.

Henry has been totally focused on restoring His century home, and has had very little time to train since last fall.  So the run was a real challenge for Him, being out there in near 100 degree heat. He gutted it out, finished 4th in His class and I was super impressed he finished such a brutal race with so little training- it was impressive.

Looking forward to upcoming Xterra One in Ravenna in 2 weeks- and will use Monroe Falls as a training race ( will be riding home from race right after we finish, if anyone wants to hit hills in Valley right after race)

Maumee Bay Triathlon Race Report

Submitted by Dave Miceli.

Name:  Maumee Bay Olympic Triathlon

Time:  2hr 11min 45sec

Place:  14th overall

The Maumee Bay Triathlon is looked about 20min northeast of Toledo.  This race is put together by hfpracing.com and it always seems to draw a very large and competitive field.  They offer many options for the racer including a duathlon, sprint and Olympic triathlons and even a woman’s only triathlon race.  The venue is at Maumee State Park which offers camping and numerous activities for one to do with family/friends both pre and post race.

The swim is in Maumee Bay and it always seems to be flat and at a very comfortable temperature.  The water is murky which makes for some bumper swimmer action as it is very crowded, in particular on the first loop when you have both sprint and Olympic athletes in the water.  The swim is one rectangular loop for the sprint race and two loops for the Olympic distance athletes.  Athlete waves at this race are spaced at approximately four minutes apart so there is not much waiting around once the race begins.

Upon exiting the swim, you run about 100meters into transition.  The racks are numbered but this is one transition where you must make a strong mental note of your rack as it can be a bit confusing with small numbers on the racks and no numbers on your bike (hfp has minimal stuff at the race which means only one body marked number – no bike number and no bib).  On to the bike course and you will usually find some wind and zero hills – this is a bike PR course if you go after it.  The race is one bike loop for the sprint and two for the Olympic athletes.  A huge improvement this year was brand new blacktop in the park entrance/exit areas as in the past this was incredibly bumpy/rough.

The run portion of the race is flat overall although there can be some extremely small grades at times.  It is a very spectator friendly run which passes the transition area three times.  The run is one out-n-back and is half exposed to the sun and half through the woods although the entire run is on pavement.  There are four aid stations which serve water and Heed products.  The run takes place entirely within the park with only one significant turn – another PR type of run if the legs allow it.

Maumee Bay is a very good experience overall.  The race is well directed and the course is simply fast.  One of the greatest features of this race is that it allows for great competition and is very well represented by the Northeast Ohio triathlon community.  Its always a blast to catch up with old friends/faces while burning through the calories at the same time.

National 24HR Bike Challenge

This years race held in Middleville, Mi on June 20th included Team ER’s Cassie Schumacher. This event attracts top endurance cyclist from all over the country who race straight through the 24 hours completing as many miles as possible in that time frame.

We at Team ER are extremely proud of Cassie’s performance. She covered 364.2 miles, came in 1st in her age group, 2nd overall female and 22nd overall.

Nicely done Cassie.
