Orrville Firecracker 5K

Ray Fryan

It was a medium-tough rolling course, and I ran a not-so-smart race strategy.  Sub-6:00 n the first two miles, which were hillier, which set me up to bonk a little bit on the flatter last mile at 6:10.  Overall, I ran a 18:16, placed 5th overall, and won my age group.  The funny part of the race was me catching a 14 yr old at about 2.5 miles in, and expecting I could out-kick him.  Youth was served big time.  About 1/4 mile from the finish he showed me that he is 14, and I am not!

North Canton July 4th 5 Mile

Jeannie Ritchie

I ran the North Canton’s 5 mile race on the 4th.  I was 9th women overall and 1st in my age group with a time of 33:43.

The race had nearly 3000 participants- their best turnout ever.  The race course was nicely marked.  There were a good amount of people standing or sitting in front of their houses cheering the runners on.  There were plenty of water stations.  The course had a good amount of hills and turns.   Josh was able to see me at least 4 or 5 times (Of course he had to run to different spots so he got a good run in too!) They did change the course this year in which the last half mile was run on S. Main St..  It was a pretty decent size finish with arch and clock with the street lined with spectators!  Pretty cool!  It was a tough course but worth it!

Jim Dehner – 1/2 Marathon

I did the 1/2 marathon in Columbia Station on Sunday – it’s a small, local event with a unique twist – you can either run or in-line skate – and the skaters were out – I guess there just not that many events for skaters.  The course is west of Cleveland and goes through some farm land with rolling hills – The last 3 miles have some significant climbs up to the finish at the local high school – We were fortunate on the course and only had a little light rain – I guess at the finish line there was a period of steady rain –

Since the race was small I was the only guy in my age groups – ran a 2:09 – which is OK for me right now.

Mark Gorris and Family, Green 5K

The Gorris Family was out in full force for the Green YMCA Caribbean 5k today.  Luke ran [with pacing and encouragement from Mom and Dad] the 5k in 29:15, and had plenty of gas left in the tank for a strong finish.   Dad had enough gas left in the tank to run 3+ more loops so I was able to run a 5k with my son and an extra 10 miles on my own killing two birds with one stone!

We also saw fellow Team ER’s own Ken Frankenbery and his wife, Karen.  Ken sure did lay down a killer run after being on the IR the last few months.

Green YMCA 5K, June 22, 2013

It was a warm, sunny morning and a decent crowd of maybe 150 or so people. Teamate Mark Gorris was running with his son ( who did great!), and after a 20 minute delay(and several warm ups- police showed up late )- we were off! There were half a dozen younger high school runners who shot off to the lead, following them up the first hill I was so excited to be racing, I looked down and was running a 5:45 pace (way to fast) – I tried to slow, but wanted to keep leaders in sight, hit mile 1 at 6:05 (and that was up hill). I finally settled into a better pace, and started picking off a few of the people in front of me. The temp. was climbing ( 77 degrees when we finished) , but I felt good. Finished strong in 19:40 ( 6:19 pace).Waiting for results to be posted, but 4th overall, 1st in age group, a solid comeback after surgery!

Glad to be back racing, and hopefully will be able to start swimming mid-July.

Towpath 10K/10 Miler

Jim Dehner, time 55:30

The race is part of the towpath trilogy and is a fun format where 2 races of different distances start from different points at the same time yet have the same finish line – I ran the 10K – It started on Canal Road and went north for 1 mile then joined up with the towpath – The entire path up there is paved so the footing is good – the course overall is flat and fast – you do cross the 2 cable bridges on the return to the finish – virtually the only “hills” on the course –

Aside from the rain at the start it was a good race –

Since there were only 2 of us in the AG – I was assured of a podium finish 🙂

Max’s CDH Awareness 5K Green, Oh

Jeannie Ritchie –  1st woman overall, time: 20:20

This morning I ran a 5k race called Max’s CDH Awareness.  The parents who lost their son to this birth defect make this race happen every year.  They had a decent turnout with about 250 runners for the 5k.  They also have a race for kids, a lap around the track at Green high School, called Max’s mad dash.  The weather was near perfect for a race–sunny and about 60 degrees.  The race course was set up very nice with no question on where to go.  They also had a vehicle leading the runners.  The start and finish were at the same location with a 100m on the track!  Very nice and fast!  The course was mostly flat with the exception of the last mile-slow uphill about 400m.  The times of everyone were a little slower than normal because it was 3.15  on most of our GPS’s.  Hermes racing chip timed the event and results were right up.
The best part was the jumpy castles, dunk tank and kona cones for the kiddos!  Spectator friendly too- my family got to see me at least 4 times to cheer me on!  That was a plus!  Top 3 overall received tons of nice Tupperware- gift wrapped.  They also had tons of gifts to raffle off and an auction for many awesome gifts!  Very nice race and I highly recommend participating in it.
