Race Review By Scott Orlando

This was my second time competing in the Raintree 5K.   The race is run mostly on the fairways and cart paths of the golf course which makes this race a very unique running experience.  The course was changed this year and pretty much flipped in direction from last year.   The new course added more elevation change particularly at the 2.5 mile mark with a nasty little hill.  My goal was to run the course averaging just under a 7 minute mile pace.   A half mile into the race I could tell I wasn’t feeling right.   I was laboring hard and was surprised that my first half mile spilt was just a 7:20 pace.   I knew right away I was going to struggle to meet my pace goal.   I managed to pick up the pace some and finished the first mile at a 7:08 pace but well off of my goal pace.   I felt tired and my legs felt slow and heavy.  I am not sure if maybe I wasn’t fully recovered from the triathlon I competed in the week before or what was going on.   My goal quickly shifted to maintaining my current pace and position with the hope to win my age division.   I knew another runner in my division was just behind me so I couldn’t let down.  2 miles into the race Team ER member Christine Churpek passed me on a fairway heading off the golf course onto the road section of the course.   She was having an excellent race.   I was grinding and working hard to maintain my pace.   The short steep hill at the 2.5 mile point slowed me down and it took a few minutes to recover but I was able to make a strong push to the finish.   In the end I didn’t reach my pace goal but did win my age division.   Christine Churpek finished as the 3rd overall female.   Team ER members Kris Engstrom, Cleopatra Sirnic Clifford, and Renee Buckus all had great race results.   Race awards included pies for age group winners and golf towels for 2nd and 3rd place winners.   Race swag included super soft t-shirts, water bottles, Cliff Bars and Quest Bars.   The race was very well organized by the City Of Green and made possible by the hard work of Josh Ritchie and Mickey Rzymek.

I was proud to represent Team ER at the Springfield Ohio Games race today. I completed my first Olympic Triathlon!
They had a good turn out of participants. The swim was in the lake at Buck Creek State park (a little windy, but we all pushed through), biking country roads through Springfield, OH with rolling hills and police at every intersection to let us keep rolling, and an out and back run on a damn overlooking the lake. I would recommend it to other team members!

Race Review By Scott Orlando:

This was my 6th time competing in the Great Island Adventure Triathlon. (5K kayak, 15 mile bike, and 5K run).   The race was last offered in 2018 so I was happy to see it back for 2021.

I set a race PR finishing in 1:50:12 taking 6th place overall and 3rd in my age division. 5 of the top 7 finishers were in my age division.

I fell behind early in the field of super fast kayakers. I made up a little time on the bike passing a few people on the two lap course. The magic really happened on the run. I dropped a 7:15 first mile and started passing other racers. I completed the run in 22:50 with average pace of 7:22 per mile.  The race was well organized as it usually has been in the past.  Racers received long sleeve shirts and plenty of post race food for refueling.   My race packet included probably the most unique piece of race swag I have ever received which was a hand made key chain made our of authentic chain mail armor provided by one of the sponsors.

Race Review By Ken Frankenbery:

First Rule of races is always show up!  The weather forecast was bad with rain showers predicted for race time, but I loaded up and headed there anyway.  Clouds looked bad, but set I set up in the transition area , warmed up, and promoter started race a few minutes early to beat the rain.
First 2 mile run went well-14:08/7:04 pace. I had ad a good transition and as I started on bike a few drops started.  The sky looked bad, but no real rain.  I pushed bike hard and averaged 18.3 mph.  Another quick transition and run 2 was 15:06/7:33 pace. Total Time 1:03:48
The sky cleared and we finished to clear blue skies.

I was happy with my race as I finished 15th overall, 2nd in my age group, and beat my 2019 time ( by 10 second!),  I  got to catch up with 6 Teammates ( 5 did race). It was a great workout !
