Monroe Falls Tri – 6-24-2012

Submitted by Ken Frankenbery

Perfect weather and a sold out crowd of over 300 for the annual Monroe Falls Sprint Triathlon (400 meter swim- 12 mile bike-3 mile run)

After a solid 20 minute warm up ( how Henry can start with no warm up is a medical miracle!!), swim went ok,  not as good as I would have liked, but came out of the water in 34th overall,2nd in my age group. Henry had a great swim, was just ahead of me, and had one of his best transitions to hold His lead on the bike

Had a solid Bike- the Trek Tri bike really makes a difference- averaged 21.6 mph, but got edged out by Henry who averaged over 22 mph, so ended up with 2nd fastest bike time in my age group, 21st overall.

The second transition went better, started run and caught Henry (finally!!)just out of transition- run went great, had 14th fastest run time- felt solid for the whole race, ended up winning my age group ( Henry was a solid second)- and ended up 16th overall.

As soon as race was over, jumped on road bike, and got in a solid 30 mile ride through the valley- a great day and great workout!!

Cassie Schumacher in Race Across America 2012

Since June 12, Cassie Schumacher has been on a journey of epic proportions, riding her bicycle across America in support of our nation’s veterans. In order to finish the race, she needs to pedal from Oceanside, California to Annapolis,  Maryland in 12 days – and that’s including time to eat and sleep. The race is about 3,000 miles long.

As of today, Cassie is more than half way through, with having ridden over 1,584 miles! The desert heat is behind her and Annapolis is getting closer to the horizon!

Cheer her on! Go, Cassie, go!

Like Ron Hudas, I had a blast running the Inaugural Canton Marathon along my group of running friends from the Jackson Y.  The course was definitely a challenging one with plenty of rolling hills.  The 6am start along with excellent community support and ample fluid/gatorade stops made a June Marathon in humid NE Ohio bearable and doable.  The plan was to run it for fun as a “Pack” and that is what we did as 8 of us crossed the line together in a time of 3:41.

Steve Bable
29th age group 234 overall time 3:57:07

Canton marathon success! 26 miles of rolling hills, but with only 2 months of training I finished 3:37. 2nd in my age group and 16th female overall.

East Fork Xterra 6-10-2012 – Ken Frankenbery

 Submitted by Ken Frankenbery

Ohio finally scored a stop on the Xterra circuit, so decided to skip the Richmond Virginia race (my favorite- but on same weekend) – to check out their inaugural event.

Henry, Randy and I made the trip down Saturday, to pre ride the bike loop for Sundays race. It was a fun and fast 12 mile loop, and I was glad to have my new specialized hard tail, it was the perfect choice, the course was fun fast, and 90% tight single track. The conditions were great, water temp just cold enough to be wet suit legal, no chance of rain, and an 80 degree sunny day.

The swim was in the East Fork state park lake, a 1000 meters loop- they tried a time trial start, with chip timing each person’s time starts when they cross the matt, so they asked all participants to seed themselves as to expected swim time ( fastest swimmers up front)- after some thought, ( and there was no big fight to go off first- people wanted to draft)- I decided to line up in front- even though I am not a strong swimmer, I figured the fewer people in front of me when we hit the bike, the better ( hard to pass).

My swim was fair at best, it was mentally hard to have so many people pass me (44 to be exact!)- But I hit the bike like a man on a mission, and had a great bike, passing over 35 riders. Had a good transition, passed a few there, and hit the 5 mile trail run feeling good. The run was an out and back tight hiking trail, which was tough, because on the way back, had to deal with all the people coming the other way (had close to 100 people there). It did help tell you where you were ( counting runners coming at you!), and before the turnaround point, I counted 6 people, so knew I had a solid 7th overall, which I held to the finish

I ended up first in my age group, beating second by over 15 minutes.

Henry had a great bike, and He and Randy both had solid races, winning their age groups.

The Blossom – Brenda O`Hara

Last weekend I ran the Blossom time 5.25 miler in 50:21. And this weekend I just returned from America’s most beautiful bike ride in Lake Tahoe. A century ride full of climbing and descending switchbacks. What an experience! Because it’s a “ride” and not a race, they want you to enjoy the scenery and it’s not timed. Excluding water stops and lunch my bikes computer  said 6 hrs 46 min.
