I competed in the Hilton Head Sprint Triathlon over the weekend in South Carolina. It was a great event- beautiful ocean swim and beach run! I placed second overall for women, first in my age group. Afterwards, I answered many questions from the local triathletes about our races in Ohio. They couldn’t believe the number of triathlon teams and number of races we have. Most everyone I met race alone and had only been able to find 3 races since March. Guess we are lucky up here in the north after all 🙂 Megan
CLEVELAND ZOO, TIME 49MINS 5TH OVERALL FEMALE
Ran the race for Maggie’s place 9k at the zoo sat. Great race, and a great cause. Proceeds go to a shelter for homeless pregnant women and moms. 49 min even. 5th place overall female. Hilly as heck!
Akron Marathon 9-28-2013
Weather wise, a perfect day, 55 degrees at the start- no wind and a clear sky
First 4 miles were a little crowded, but not bad, felt good, and had to keep watching my pace, was feeling good, and had to really hold back.
At 11 mile mark, things really thinned out, when all the ½ marathon people took the turnoff. There is a massive mile plus downhill, and I tried to let it fly, but was hard after 10 miles on my legs, and knowing I had not even hit the ½ way mark. I held a 7:15 pace (my goal pace) all the way to mile 16, but that’s when you hit the sand run parkway, which is a 4 mile section of up and down hills, with a huge straight up hill at the end. Those hills dropped me to a 7:25 pace, but the toll it took on my legs was huge. The 7.27 pace group started to pass me, and I tried everything to hang with them. I did not know it at the time, but was within 30 seconds of 2nd place till mile 22, then lost 4 minutes to him. I think He was in that group
I was doing well drinking, and took in 2 jells on schedule feeling ok, but at mile 24 had dropped to a 730 pace,1/2 the 727 group had slowly pulled away, the other ½ dropped behind me . The last 2 miles are downhill, and there was not dropping my time down like I had anticipated, my legs would just not let me get into a long stride (they kept wanting to do the Ali shuffle- short little strides).
I finished in 3:18, 3rd in my class, 96 overall (out of 1664),a cool finish with a huge crowd in the Aero’s stadium,
Not sure any more marathon are on my 2 do list, I miss the multi-sport racing

Rough race for me in Erie. On pace thru first half at sub 1:35 but never got in comfortable pace with heart rate jumping up early. Started to have issues at 16-20 mi and finished in 3:26, 1 min off BQ cut. As far as race goes, scenic and flat 2 loop marathon on Presque Isle. Had about 3,000 runners between full and half. Abundant fluid stops every mile, but low key, monotonous type race with little to no fanfare making it a bigger challenge. Often wondered about flat courses but now believe some rolling hills are better for me. Looking at possibly ending fall with another marathon before letting go of the 18 wks of Daniels marathon training and going into winter mode. Some cross training with swimming and cycling over the next 1-2 weeks will help me make the decision.

North Coast Challenge, Westlake Ohio 8-30-2013
5 Mile race, with a lot of competition! Just over 300 runners, but they pay large cash prices for overall winners (including Masters), and cash bounty for anyone who breaks course record (Male/ Female and Masters). A very well organized race and a deep field
Top 3 runners were under 25 minutes (4.40 minute mile average), the top Masters runner came in at 28.05 (5.37 mile), which under the conditions (over 70 degrees and very humid) was solid.
I had a good race, 32.17 for 30th overall, and 2nd in my age group.
ALEX……..70.3 GREATER BUCKEYE HALF
RAY……ALLIANCE CASTLE RUN 10K
Alliance Castle Run 10K – 41:32, 15th overall (227 finishers total), 1st age group. Monday morning’s high humidity and temperature added difficulty to an already challenging course. I was really proud to see my wife (Peggy) get 3rd in her age group (55:02), and my daughter (Brigitte) get 1st in her age group (44:21). It was a good day for the Fryan’s!
I did the Riverbluff tri in Nashville – Unfortunately I blew up on the bike leg (pushed a little too hard on a very hot day) and ended up DNF- I would recommend this tri for anyone looking for a late season race – Very well run and the venue is beautiful – The swim is in the Cumberland river – very light current – almost not noticeable – the bike is a pretty tough rolling course in the hills that run alone the banks – part is in an “old wood” forest – probably great in the fall when the colors change – the run (they tell me) is flat and in the same forest – kinda like a tow-path surface – The have a sprint, oly and half distances – about 700 participants – fully 1/3 of which were doing the half – turns out the half is a trainer for a lot of people doing IM Florida in November
HENRY……..REV 3 1/2 IRONMAN CEDAR POINT………. 6TH AGE GROUP TIME 6;25. swim moved to bay because of waves in Lake Erie, it was longer 1.35 for 1/2 but no waves! Long transition for T-1 since we had a .6 mile run back to bike. We battled the winds on the bike course which made for longer bike times. The run was protected in the city from the winds and only had to battle a headwind for the last mile back to the finish. Overall good race, great venue and with the bay option there will always be a smooth swim!
