Race Recap By George McFall:
The temperature at the start was 48 degrees with a mostly cloudy sky. Ideal race conditions.
This was my 5th and fastest Glass City Marathon. I crossed the finish line with a time of 324:19, 7;48 pace. I placed 11th out of 58 in my age group. I was holding steady in the 7:30s until mile 12 when I clocked a 7:49 but rebounded on miles 13-15 but was back in the 7:40s at mile 16 and again at mile 18. From mile 20 until the finish I was in the high 7:50s / low to mid 8:00s. The last 800 is a downhill then flattens out with a left turn, right turn and one final left to get into the stadium to cross the finish line on the field. Marathon #29. Thanks to all the volunteers and spectators on the course. You all are rockstars!
While I didn’t hit my goal time, I am very thankful to finish another 26.2. I have gained so much confidence over the last 12 months. Last May, I ran a 3:19:48 (BQ + 12 seconds) at the Buffalo Marathon. I followed that up with 3:20:48 (BQ +9:12) in October. In January, I ran a 3:23:59 (BQ +6:01) at the DONNA Marathon in Jacksonville Beach. And today’s 3:24:19 (BQ +5:41).
Note: Pre race, I hung out and did my warm up drills and stretching in the Team Owens Corning tent. After the race, I went back to the tent for some great food and an amazing massage. The OC crew was so helpful and friendly. Thank you!!
You know the saying “age is just a number”… well it is. I am going to be 55 in July and I am more driven to push myself to achieve new goals in running and life. I will keep showing up for myself every day and put in the work. Nothing is impossible. Thanks to my running coach Jennifer Simmerman for continuing to challenge me.
