CAT 2 Sport 50+ Race

Rick Wise

Finish Time:  1:57:15

Overall Place: 7th Place / 10

Race Recap By Rick Wise:

I had a decent season opener of the Northern Ohio Mountain Northern Ohio Mountain Bike Series (NOMBS) at Camp Tuscazoar yesterday. It was my first race back after SI joint problems forced me to end last year’s season early. Unfortunately, I got tangled up with two other riders in the Sport/Cat 2 mass start, causing two of us to unclip, remount, and start from the back of the pack. I’m not confident I would have placed any higher even if I had a clean start. I finished 7th out of 10 in the 50+ Sport/Cat 2 age group. I was slower than last year, but still rehabbing the back/SI joint and haven’t been able to train as much this year, so I’m satisfied with the result. Already looking forward to the next race.

Race Recap By George McFall:

The temperature at the start was 48 degrees with a mostly cloudy sky. Ideal race conditions.
This was my 5th and fastest Glass City Marathon. I crossed the finish line with a time of 324:19, 7;48 pace. I placed 11th out of 58 in my age group. I was holding steady in the 7:30s until mile 12 when I clocked a 7:49 but rebounded on miles 13-15 but was back in the 7:40s at mile 16 and again at mile 18. From mile 20 until the finish I was in the high 7:50s / low to mid 8:00s. The last 800 is a downhill then flattens out with a left turn, right turn and one final left to get into the stadium to cross the finish line on the field. Marathon #29. Thanks to all the volunteers and spectators on the course. You all are rockstars!
While I didn’t hit my goal time, I am very thankful to finish another 26.2. I have gained so much confidence over the last 12 months. Last May, I ran a 3:19:48 (BQ + 12 seconds) at the Buffalo Marathon. I followed that up with 3:20:48 (BQ +9:12) in October. In January, I ran a 3:23:59 (BQ +6:01) at the DONNA Marathon in Jacksonville Beach. And today’s 3:24:19 (BQ +5:41).
Note: Pre race, I hung out and did my warm up drills and stretching in the Team Owens Corning tent. After the race, I went back to the tent for some great food and an amazing massage. The OC crew was so helpful and friendly. Thank you!!
You know the saying “age is just a number”… well it is. I am going to be 55 in July and I am more driven to push myself to achieve new goals in running and life. I will keep showing up for myself every day and put in the work. Nothing is impossible. Thanks to my running coach Jennifer Simmerman for continuing to challenge me.

Race Recap By Lisa Keane:

St. Anthony’s Triathlon 2026 was a destination Tri for this Ohio girl.
Good communication & organized race includes an expo w/ vendors and giveaways and even an option to rent a bike!
Well marked, scenic course.
Tons of volunteers & kayaks / police for safety.
Nice swag & after party.
Overall and age group awards.
1st time swimming in the ocean for an event and it was very choppy and super tough. There were 3 rescues around me so the jet skis added to the wakes! Florida roads were flat and fast for the bike / run.

Race Recap By Felicia Neal:

Sunday I completed St Anthony’s Triathlon in St Petersburg, Florida. This was my first sprint triathlon! It was very challenging and HOT. Swimming in the ocean was no joke! I swallowed too much saltwater and it was very challenging navigating the water with hundreds of athletes. The race itself was very well organized with many helpful volunteers. I was so thankful to be competing with Lisa Keane and having our husbands as our cheerleaders and partners in crime. We stayed at a AIRBNB in Tierra Verde right on the ocean, ate way to much food and enjoyed the beach!

Race Recap By Scott Orlando:

It was a chilly but fun morning of paddling on the Grand River at the Lake Metroparks Madhatters Canoe and Kayak Race. A record number of participants registered for this year’s race with over 380 canoe racers, kayakers, and paddle borders braving the cold 45 degree weather to take on the 8.5 mile downriver course.

I competed in the 14’ and under kayak division which included 115 paddlers. I raced my Liquidlogic Intuit 13.5. I finished 7th overall with a time of 1:21:01. I finished in 1st place in my division. I beat last year’s time by 8 minutes. Last year 80 kayaks competed in the 14’ and under kayak race. 35 kayaks added to the race class over last year was a huge increase.
The Liquidlogic Kayaks Intuit 13.5 is a very capable well designed boat. The bow cuts the water well. It does struggle a bit to keep up with the composite 14’ kayaks some racers were using being 7” shorter and 20-30 pounds heavier. A rudder would have been helpful also for better tracking when hitting heavier currents. I believe 5 of the 6 kayaks that finished ahead of me were composite boats. I think I’m doing pretty good if most of the kayaks beating me are light and fast composite boats.

After a slow deliberate start to make sure I was properly tucked into my kayak with spray skirt secured and full paddle gloves on
I quickly got into a paddling rhythm and headed down the river. It took about 3 miles for my hands to warm up but after that I was fairly comfortable even though it was so cold.

The race was really well organized. Awards are not presented after the race because the finish area park sits so low in a valley there is no internet service. Shuttles transport participants back to their vehicles at the start location. All participants received a nice finisher medal and t-shirt.

Congratulations to all of my kayak and canoe friends who raced and did awesome! It’s always great to see them!

Race Recap By Lynett McClay:

The race is held at Mohican Lodge and Conference Building. The course is beautiful that consisted of single track, road, very technical areas with rocks roots and lots of mud and elevation and includes the stairs at the damn. This race is an out and back course. Easy packet pick up with simple directions. Plenty of parking for runners and families to cheer you on. All distances started at the same time. The course was well marked. It was a beautiful cloudy day with a touch of humidity in the air. Every runner received a soft t-shirt and finishing medal. I was a little slower this year but still was able to receive 3rd in my age group. This is one of my favorite races to do in the spring.

The volunteers were great, and I really like this course. My Garmin told me that I had a 10k PR, and I ended up winning 3rd of 13 in my age group!!

Race Recap By Stephanie Orwick:

I’ve been trying to think how to wax poetic about my Boston experience, but all I can think about is how often I said “I can’t believe this is happening” since January until I crossed the finish line. This was the first time, in a very longtime, that I said this in a positive light, which makes it so much more meaningful. And that immediately sends me into a spiral of gratitude that I will inadequately express here. Thankful for the relationship that got me into the race in the first place. Thankful for my husband and kids and in-laws for putting up with me. Thankful for @christina.nicole.c for making sure I had the best Boston experience ever (including watching Laguna Beach with me to keep me calm). Thankful for @yulieg27 and her insider tricks and tips. Thankful for @featherstonenutrition for being my airport hype girl x2. Thankful for @lauramcgreen for letting me take a picture/whip her in the face with my hair. Thankful for @findyourhappypacecoach for trying to coach me despite my lack of adherence. And SO thankful for the many, many, MANY friends and family that cheered me on. I wish I could tag you all, but apparently that gets marked as spam- ask me how I know If you made it this far, I love you and I’m so grateful you’re in my life.

Wow! Just Wow! What a great experience! Ran the Boston 5k this morning and didn’t do too badly considering I felt like I was “penned in” during the whole course. Just tried to take it in stride, and enjoy the experience.
Best part of the race was having my friend Kelly Bolden running with me, Janet Hiner Adams cheering us on at the beginning and end, and Amy Tope Palmer yell out our names along the course!
The community all along course was awesome!!
Crossed the finish line to get our finisher medal, T-shirt, and goody bag.
Looking forward to cheering on the marathoners on Monday!
