The North Water Brewing Run Club Annual Charity Beer Mile is a lot of fun and a great event!  This year’s charity sponsor was Colin-Cares which raises funds to fight cancer.   The weather was beautiful and it was a lot of fun pouring beers and cheering on the runners.   This year had the most runners participate in the 5 years of the annual event.   It was great to see so many Team ER members contributing, volunteering and running in this event.

Race Recap By Scott Orlando:

What’s better than earning a medal at a race? How about two medals! Ohio Team ER won the coed team division award and I placed 3rd in my division. I had two goals for today’s race. The first was to place in the top three in my division. The second goal was to finish under 23 minutes. I am happy to say to achieved both goals. I finished 42nd overall with a time of 22.54.

After my previous 5K in March which I wasn’t happy how I felt or my slow finish time I really refocused my training and committed to working on my pace. I also got more disciplined with my nutrition and lost 15 pounds. It was very rewarding to see all of my hard work pay off. I beat my time from last year by 30 seconds. The course for this race is challenging with lots of hills. Today I ran faster and felt better doing it. I’m still not back to where I want to be but I made a lot of progress.

It was fun sharing today’s running experience with so many Team ER members North Water Brewing Run Club members, and other running friends.
All participants received t-shirts and mini race bibs. I really like the mini bibs. They are so easy to wear. The post race ceremony was top notch with a buffet that included bagels, fruit, granola bars, Capri Suns, and chili. The sound system was much improved over previous years making it very easy to hear the awards presentation. Well done Kent State!

Thank you to all of the volunteers who showed up to make the race happen today!

Race Recap By Steve Zenar:

Another great (but chilly) April morning running the Kent State Black Squirrel 5K! Always one of my favorite races to participate in as I enjoy passing by all my old stomping grounds and classrooms in which I spent a wonderful part of my life in. Today I felt awesome and had one of my faster 5K times for this course coming in at 23:11 which was good enough for a first place in my age group . The race was well organized and I especially appreciated the awesome volunteers all along the course who were cheering and pushing us all to get up the hills and go faster. After running they had an awesome post race food selection (nothing like hot chilly after a cold run) and awards ceremony which is highly appreciated.
Look forward to doing it again in 2027!

Race Recap By Terri Bednar:

I ran the Black Squirrel 5k yesterday and this is probably my 4th or 5th time doing this race. Packet pickup is always super easy and quick and it’s close to home. This time I rolled up about 7:20 for an 8 am start. HI had time to grab my bib and do a 2 mile warmup beforehand. I placed 2nd in my AG and this was my fastest 5k in 3 years despite many steep hills! Our team even won a medal for fastest coed team! At the awards they feed you like you ran a marathon and you can get your pic with the mascot! I will do this race again!

Forget the PR 25k
This was my second year running this one and it is one of my favorites!
Well marked, mostly single track trail through beautiful Mohican State Park with all the rocks, roots, mud, tree hurdles, stream crossings, plus a covered bridge, so many stairs , and a waterfall!
Choose one loop or two for a 25K (this is a LIE – 17+ miles!) or 50K (the 2nd loop is shorter) and get ready to climb! 2890’ of elevation gain for the 25K – my poles came in handy!
Fully stocked aid stations on course with the best volunteers around. Hot lunch and cold beer at the finish!
Clean private hot shower stalls available for all athletes.
Nice swag includes soft SS tee and matching finishers medal.
This race supports local special Olympic athletes who are there to help with opening ceremonies.
I was super nervous going into this race after my half marathon fail last weekend but I redeemed myself shaving 2 minutes off of last year’s time and finishing
18th overall
9th female
3rd age group
Can’t wait to do it all again next year!

Race Recap By Lynett McClay:

Forget the PR 50K and 25K. Boy, did this race make its name. This course is one of the toughest i have done. This course is beautiful. This course consist of mostly single track, rocks ,roots, mud, and the toughest Big Ass Hill. The volunteers were fantastic at the aid stations. They helped you with what ever needs you need from getting your bottles filled to have every snack that could be used for calories. Packet pickup simple with easy directions And plenty of parking for all. All race participants received a soft tee, water bottle, medal at the finish and decorative map of the course. This year i struggled and was exhausted by climbing all those hills. I was only 4 min slower than last year’s time and I am ok with that. Congratulations to all that finished this race.

Another great race put on by Run The Land. This one was fun celebrating the Guardians Home Opener. It started and ended at Mosaic Brewing Company. This was a smaller race with about 150 participants. You could choose 2 or 4 mile distance. If you did the 4 at the turnaround they had bases set up and they timed you going around them. The course was on the towpath with lots of sites of the city, but it was quite hilly.
They had post race snacks – cracker jacks, shelled peanuts, Lekko coffee, Powerade and bananas. You could buy hot dogs or brats to go with your one free drink ticket. No medals, but a fun Guardians themed t-shirt and baseball ticket bib.

Round 3 this weekend Made in Ohio 10K! This was my first time running this race and it was fun. However when we started we all got led the wrong way and had to turn around. Talk about a confusing traffic jam. The Race Director apologized and offered a discount for next year, which was very kind. Other than that, it was a nice race. I ended up getting 1st in my age group!

Race Recap By Josh Keane:

This is certainly the most difficult race that I have ever run. The long drive home yesterday provided plenty of time to contemplate this adventure. This race certainly is not for everyone and every year there is at least a 40% drop out rate. With that said, if you are the individual that is seeking to challenge yourself and endure the difficulty of these mountains then this is a great race to do it! Race director and volunteers were top notch. Aid stations were very remote but had everything you could need. In fact I actually used more of their food than my own gels throughout the race.

The course was very well marked with streamers and arrows both on signs and on the road sections. Most of the course was very technical single track with some dirt and paved road sections that were a welcomed change for my feet. The 16,000 feet of elevation gain was absolutely brutal, but for the first time in my running career (as a bigger boy) the 16,000 of downhill also crushed my quads and my soul! The fact that you had to get up and be at the bus pick up by 02:30 to go on an hour and a half bus ride to the start of the race at 05:00 just added to the long list of challenges! In fact I was starting to fall asleep a little running down a hill with several miles to go! Another first for me! This was certainly a wonderful, terrible good day. If you ever want to put yourself to an extreme challenge this is a good way to do so!

A big shout out to John Mark Fabianich Mcclay who continues to always impress me on these challenging races and allows me to tag along. Thank you to Lynett McClay for being there to support us through it all on this trip. Thank you to Jeremey Followay ( Race Brimstone) for the support and awesome “Ohio Death Runners Swag” and of course Jody Engstrom who was my rock on this trip and an absolute great friend to travel with us a crew me. Without Jeremey and Jody I would probably dropped early in the race after a hard fall slowed me down. Most of all I want to thank Lisa Keane “my favorite Team ER team mate” for tolerating me and supporting me through all of these adventures. She could not make the trip this time but is my best friend and is always with me no matter what. Thank to all of the Ohio runners for pooling together to make this trip even better. If you hat a chance head on down and enjoy those beautiful Georgia mountains!

Race Recap By Lynett McClay:

Volunteering for Georgia Death race. This race was one the mountains of Georgia. Packet pick up was easy In the Lodge at Aminacola lodge. All runners received a hat, glass cup, and socks. Runners can sign up for extra swag like t-shirts and hoodies for a fee. I got to crew my husband John Mark Fabianich Mcclay through the whole 74ish miles. I could only see him at mile 21, 27 and 43 and the finish. The morning of was freezing cold and by the afternoon was in the 70s and by evening was cold again. I want to congratulate John Fabianich McClay, and Josh Keane for completing one of the toughest races on the east coast.

Flirt with Dirt Half Marathon 2026
Well marked & challenging (mostly) trail race. Lots of rocks, roots, water crossings, & elevation for a challenging loop course. Choose your distance – 1 loop or 2.
10K starts early morning & half marathon mid morning to keep the trail traffic thin.
Nice swag – Short sleeve cotton tee and matching finishers medal, hot vegetable soup lunch, & overall / age group awards.
Today was not my day! I started off feeling strong but wilted at the halfway point and just couldn’t get it together. I have been messing with my diet and I think it was a fuel issue (not enough carbs). Every race is different and a learning experience. Forward is progress!

Race recap By Terri Bednar:

Flirt with Dirt 10k! Had a good race but didn’t have any friends to take pics so I did a selfie in the car. The course was great except for the mile trek up a paved road. I was 4th in my age group. I finished in 1:05:53. Not too bad considering this was only my second time on the trails since September. I will do this race again!

Race Recap By Lori Fritz:

I ran the Cooper River Bridge 10k this morning in South Carolina with my cousin. This race is the third largest 10k in the country! (Peachtree is first and Boulder is second).
This race is so well organized and incredibly well staffed with volunteers and safety personnel!
Weather this morning was a bit chilly at 60° with a real feel of about 55°, which made it perfect for running!
The expo the day before did not disappoint with so many great vendors!
Was very happy with my finish time and pace!
Finished #38 out of 825 in my age group.
8583 out of 33,669 overall.
For anyone interested, next year is their 50th and if you plan to do it, you will want to book now!
